This page is the result of an on-going survey of Norton Commandos.  The idea it to understand better the history of he Commando as it related to the numbers made and some of the changes over the years. It is not always possible to know if bikes are original and often they have been changed, sometimes radically from how they were made.  Generally, the Notes column tries to make what is known and what isn't clear.

Please write me at marshg@gregmarsh.com is you have any info to share and if you have a factory record, please send a copy!

Frame Numbering:

Norton frames were initially made by Reynolds (British Company) and later by Verlicchi (Italian company).

There is sometimes confusion over "frame numbers" on Commandos. The red metal plate attached to the headstock with hammer drive screws is called a Certification Label. It normally contains the bike's serial number (engine/gearbox number) and a date (Month and Year). 850s have that and except for the first 6000 or so, they have a number stamped into the metal on the timing side of the head stock - that is the frame number.  750s after 1968 have no frame number.

There are four types of 850 frame numbers. They all have a special character intermixed which is similar to Norton Frame Symbol:

Norton Frame Symbol850Norton Frame SymbolxxxxxxNorton Frame Symbol     Pre-MKIII Reynolds frame - xxxxxx matches the engine number (This may or may not be true.  I've been told this, but have no proof and have never seen one to check)
Norton Frame Symbol850Norton Frame SymbolF1xxxxxNorton Frame Symbol     Pre-MKIII Verlicchi frame - xxxxx does not match the engine number
Norton Frame Symbol850Norton Frame SymbolF125001Norton Frame Symbol     When Norton started building the MKIII the frame number started at 125001 and then went sequentially (more or less) from there until mid-May 1975
Norton Frame Symbol850Norton Frame SymbolxxxxxxNorton Frame Symbol     MKIII from mid-May - the F was eliminated and xxxxxx matched the engine number

This info below is not verified and if you have anything to dispute, change, or back it up, I would like to hear it:
  • In theory, all 850s had a frame number and no 750s did.  However, it is clear that the first 6000 or so 850s had no frame number. Also, the 68 and early 69 750s had the serial stamped into the headstock and there was not Red Certification label.
  • It appears that most 850 frames were made by Verlicchi, but Ken Sprayson (of Reynolds) in his book "The Frame Man" ISBN-10 095649756X said the agreement between Norton and Reynolds was to continue supplying frames until Reynolds stock of tubing was been used up.
  • Supposedly if there was a problem with a Verlicchi frame, Reynolds would fix it.
  • In general, Reynolds used imperial sized tubing (1” & 2.25”) and Verlicchi used metric sized tubing (25mm & 60mm - .984" & 2.362").
    • However there are frames with a mix of the two
    • One theory is that Reynolds fixed Verlicchi frames using imperial tubes.
  • I've been told that for 850s:
    • Reynolds stamped the frame number on the drive-side of the headstock and Verlicchi on the timing-side - I do not believe this.
    • I've also been told that the Reynolds number would match the engine and that the Reynolds frames did not include the "F".  I have some proof otherwise and do not believe it..
    • Until recently I had not seen any numbers on the drive side of the head stock.  Then these came up:
      • 235297 has no number on the timing side and 00100 on the drive side.
      • 300107 has no number on the timing side and 00100 on the drive side.
      • 301037 has no number on the timing side and 00100 on the drive side.
      • 304987 has no number on the timing side and 00109 on the drive side.
      • 306028 has no number on the timing side and 00116 on the drive side.
      • 310028 has 850F104129 on the timing side and 00123 on the drive side.
      • 312097 has 850F005218 on the timing side and 00122 on the drive side.
      • 235677 has 850F105911 on the timing side and 00125 on the drive side. (Engine Serial actually 235677Norton Frame Symbol1)
      • 312547 has 850F107291 on the timing side and 00126 on the drive side.
      • 319416 has 850F107384 on the timing side and 00126 on the drive side.
      • 318299 has 850F109123 on the timing side and 00127 on the drive side.
      • 318478 has 850F109297 on the timing side and 00129 on the drive side.
    • Those 3-digit numbers are too close together to be frame numbers for the bikes - there are months between them. Notice the highlighted duplicate and out of order numbers.
    • The current thinking is that they are a batch number; but, are they Reynold or Verlicchi?
    • I've had many bikes checked that have no drive-side numbers but there are many more than have not been checked.
When providing your bike's info, it is most helpful if as complete info as possible and let me know how sure you are that each part is original.  If you have the factory dispatch record, I would love a copy.  Here's the desired info:
  • Serial Number from engine, gearbox and Red Certification label.  If all the same just provide the engine serial and say matching numbers.
  • Date from the Red Certification label.
  • Frame number of the timing side of the headstock, if any.  850s from about serial 306000 should have one.  If you're sure there's no number, please say so.
  • Any numbers from the drive side of the headstock.
  • The head type.
  • Anything you would like to about the bike (e.g., original color, current color, model, operational or not, etc.)
Survey Results: Info on 563 Commandos found so far

No one seems to know how many were actually built but drawing from various sources, including this page, I think about 24,600 750s, 23,100 850s before MKIII, and 10,800 MKIIIs which makes the total 58,500. I've seen totals as high as 60,000 and as low as 50,000.  I'm confident that I'm not far off.

127669See NotesSee NotesRH3I recently purchased a Norton Commando frame no 127669 first registered in March 1969 here in the UK, although I was told by Andover Norton when ordering some parts it was manufactured in June 1968. The frame number is stamped on the drive side of the head stock - there is no red Certification Label - the bike was built before that startedd being used. It has the old style centre stand and the side stand is in the middle of bottom section of the frame and very awkward to use. It is not a matching numbers bike the gearbox has the same number as the frame. The engine no is 203228 and a "C" on the head
127961-----See NotesMatching numbers. Frame number stamped in headstock Owner said: Red, First Registered 04 12 68, Current owner since 1972 (It was so good why would I ever part with it?)
128231-----See NotesOwner says: I bought this bike about 25 years ago. It still has the widow maker frame and the frame number is stamped on the left side of the headstock. Timing side tach drive, points distributor where the mag goes, has the plastic Norton Villers round tank badges and it still has the Atlas style mufflers on it.;

131183N/AOwner says: The fuel tank on this is shaped like a Fastback fuel tank but it has extensions on each side that stick out maybe 2 inchs that follow the lines of the tank, I don’t know if this was done to increase the capacity or if someone got creative with the fiberglass or what I’ve never seen a FB tank like this one before .
131227Mar 69N/AFastback, one of the genuine rarer red/silver versions. Under restoration. This bike was imported to New Zealand from the US.
131286Mar 69N/ACertification Label shows Mar 1969 with build location London. Andover Norton supplied a despatch copy showing build date Mar 12, 1969 shipped to Norton Villiers in California on Mar 19, 1969.
132218Apr 69N/A"S" Model. Engine and Cert label match, gearrbox doesn't. Mostly used for show.

133040Jun 69N/ABought on eBay by a customer of mine 8/21/21. Matching numbers , Partly rebuild as a Black Roadster but is really an S-Type. It was shipped to me or sorting out then the customer decided he didn't want it and I bought it. Will eventaully rebuild back to original. The gearbox has a new case - no number.
133096N/AActual engine number: 20M3S 133096, was originally a S type Commando despatched from the factory 16th June 1969 to Los Angeles, CA
133140Jun 69N/AAccording to the factory records, this was a S-Type built Jun 12, 1969 (Thursday), Batch 2627
133141Jun 69N/AAccording to the factory records, this was a S-Type built Jun 16, 1969 (Monday), batch 2651, and was dispatched to Norton Villers Corp, LA on Jun 26, 1969 with 23 other S-Types on the ship Axel Johnosn. Today, this is a fully restored S-Type in blue and all matching numbers. However the tank is Fiberglas This wa pre-sold to a customer but he has disappeared. You have to ask me - I want MUCH less for this one that it should get - normally I would ask for $15,000 but I do';t have a lot in it so you can proably talk be down a bit from $11,000. If you want the tank replaced wth steel I can do that but we'll have to discuss the color and side panels. If you want them all done in a different color, that will be $1,500.
133926See NotesN/ARolling black café racer project sold on eBay. Engine/Gearbox match but not the frame. Certification Label has 312189 and Dec 73. So, actally 133926 is RIP and the engine/gearbox for 312189 is unknown.
133929-----N/A-----Parted out - bought the bottom end for $273 delivered 9/5/23. The crankshaft, conrods, oil pump and timing case timing parts are savable. The cases look OK. The camshaft and other things are toast This ia 1970 engine but later so 20M3S rather than 20M3.
133941N/AActual engine number: 20M3S 133941, was originally a S type Commando despatched from the factory 14th August 1969 to New York, NY. This bike is probably RIP as it's gearbox in in 133096

134548See NotesN/ACertification Label is unreadable for the date but the bike was registered in 1970. S-Type. Matching numbers. Originally was Fireflake Blue, is not Canary Yellow.
134673See NotesN/ACertification Label is unreadable for the date but the owners club checked the factory records: It has a manufacture date of 17tth Dec 1969. Verified as an S Code. No colour recorded but there is blue metallic paint under the black paint on the fiberglas tank That should mean that it is Sapphire Blue. Was then shipped to a dealership in France. More Info owner/owner's club: 134673 it was described as a Commando S type late 1969 correctly. As mentioned on the phone you have purchased this from the USA but I have confirmed, it went to France first. Continental Cars had three outlets in the USA and one in France. So your S type found it`s way there somehow. I have also checked the colour which was not listed in this case.
134680-----N/A-----This bike is probably RIP as an Access Norton member has the gearbox wiht that number.

135729N/ASeen on eBay 12/16/23. Nice looking bike being sold as a 70S. The last "S" was 135088 so it didn't leave the factory as an "S". It has a Black with Silver lining "D" style. Black/Silver never existed and the "S" was never black. No mention of matching numbers.
135730-----N/A-----Parted out - Engine Cases seen on eBay 1/25/22
136106N/AOwner says: I just bought this one back from the guy I restored it for. This one originally came to me in 2005 as a complete bike in sorry shape. Not much left of the original bike, but I am glad to have it back. It is a lovely rider! Based on the frame that it came with, it had been a chopper at one time - the steering head had been raked out with some very questionable welds, and I found evidence that a sissy bar had been welded to the rear loop at one time. The main tube had a very noticeable bend in it - hence the frame was scrapped and a decent 1971 frame replaced it, updated with a later kickstand lug.
136349See NotesN/AOwner says:that the Certificaiton Label has the whole word “APRIL” stamped along one edge (looks original), assume April 1970 build, bike has been owned by my late uncle since 1978, has 13,000 original miles. Black Roadster, matching numbers. At some point, the oil tank, air cleaner back plate, battery tray, and side covers have been replaced with ’71-later ones. I inherited the bike, and I am restoring it to road worthy condition. Colour will be changed to yellow, although the original black body work will be preserved. I am the third owner.;

142281Jan 71N/AMatching numbers. Quite a story with this one. A friend of mine bought this not running in 1973. He was a civilian electrical engineer for the Navy in Ca. He either rode this bike or drove a 1957 TR3 to work every day. He is just now getting where he has a hard time kick starting and getting on center stand. His plan is to add an alton electric start and a side stand.

145253Mar 71N/AThe factory record has no headers so it's difficult to know for sure what each column means. It shows that the bike was sent to NVC, Long Beach, CA and it was yellow. It lists two dates 4-5-71 and 7-4-71. I suspect that it means it was finished April 7, 1971 and shipped May 4, 1971. It also lists "S-S". The current owner bought the bike in 1974 and by then it was a black Roadster. It has matching numbers.

The owner said:The story behind my purchase in 1975 from Leo's Motorcycle in Bloomington MN is that my Commando was a 1974 Mk2a, and had been purchased brand new (prior to me) but had come back to the dealer (with about 600 miles on it) due to the original purchaser's financing fell through. (So I was told) My confidence in being able to authenticate this information is limited to only what I was told by the dealer. This being all the way back in 1975, that is the only memory of details that I have. At the time the 850 Commando was selling for $1,850 new but they were selling mine at $1,700 since it was technically not "new". I grabbed it and have had it ever since!!

Below the black and white photos were taken by my brother just shortly after I got it. You can see the "break in" procedure sticker still on the speedo. Of course you can see the mufflers that came with it, the seat that came with it (which later on I seemed to come to understand that this seat was unusual. When I went to replace it years later due to wear, that exact seat was not listed in any parts documents. My British parts guy could not find any information on the seat that came with it. You can also see that it originally came with the crossover balance pipe between the exhaust headers. (I have since removed) Also in the black and white pic I think I might have already painted my side covers black, I had some goofy idea that it would look better. But when i bought it it did come with the matching red paint and the "850 Commando" decal. I restored the original paint job many years ago, along with the proper decals as seen in later pictures I have attached. The battery is oriented across the frame, not in line. The bike did come with the big black plastic air box.

The bike originally had some Dunstall accessories most of which the current owner still has but not on the bike. He also has the original sales documentation from Dunstall. 304800---------------From Andover Norton's "The Source". Factory record says: Batch: 1209C,(batch of 90), Interstate, Market: UK, Color: Black, Date off Track: Jun 7, 73, Date Passed Test: Jun 8, 73, Date Despatched: Jun 15, 73. 305439Jun 73See Notes1973 850 MkI with ham can air filter assembly. I bought this new, zero miles, from Taylor-Matterson in Feb '74. Still have it. Not sure of its original colour, as I had the T-M people convert it from a Roadster to a Black Interstate, but retaining the peashooter exhausts before shipping it to me in Canada. I have the metalflake Candy Red roadster tank, side covers and seat to change it back and forth. Purchased these parts from a Norton shop in UK in late 70's, so gen. Norton bits. Engine and gearbox rebuilt at 40,000 miles. Crash damage necessitated a NOS frame, sourced from a shop in UK in 1983

307094Sep 73RH4Certification label date odd when considering serial numbers around this one. MK2A first registered in the UK Jul 74, Black barrel, black box air filter, balance pipe with split collets, long swingarm bushes, no chain guard extension, black Roadster. Important: The NOC says MK2A - see the "Important Note" on the Commando ID page - this serial is supposedly too low for a MK2 or MK2A! This serial must have hung around the factory for a long time. Also, the head is right for the serial but wrong for the date.

I suspect that it began life as an Interpol, although it has been in Interstate trim since at least 1978. It has had the same engine and frame pairing since at least 1978 (the earliest record I have for the bike), and no record on the UK Department of Transport database that the frame number has changed over the life of the bike. Interestingly, the engine number is not stamped on the red ID plate (it's been left blank and appears to be the original plate). The gearbox shell has been changed at some point and does not match the engine."

There is a stamp on the frame gusset (by the rear iso mount drive side) is F-7/73. All frame tubing appears to be Imperial.

The gearbox is 130308

313739Apr 74See NotesRH3This ia a bitsa. It is currently a black, 750 Roadster. The certificaiton label has been re-made and says APRIL 1974 (should not be spelled out). The cylinders and head are 750 but the bottom end is 850. The frame has no number on the headstock so the frame is likely a 750 frame. The gearbox is 235196 so in the special 73 serial range. Government documentation has 313739 but no mention of the engine size- just says Commando for model. It has 932 carbs and no visible head number. From the gap between the cylinders and head I suspect a Combat or high-complession 73 750. My assumption is that 313739 was crashed and 235196 was used to rebuild it.

319265Aug 74850F111966RH10From the Andover Norton dispatch records, "Built" Aug 26, 1974, Dispatched Aug 27, 1974, MK2 Roadster. The bike was sold new in Sept 1975 in Wellington New Zealand. It is therefore registered as a 1975 bike by the NZ Transport authority.

Owner Said: "I am the third owner and bought the bike in 1978. I still know the second owner and only the first 18 months of its life is unknown to me. I think the bike may have been raced in the first 18 months of its life. The engine had a non standard camshaft, mainstand removed and the tank was painted black. I think it may have originally been a metalflake blue colour.

In 2019/20 I upgraded with several CNW components including - Brembo front brake, hydraulic clutch, Mk 111 type isolastics, CNW electric start. It also has a Dave Taylor head steady, one piece rear axle, and other detailing. The gearbox case has been replaced because of cracks between bearing housings etc. The engine is on first rebore with J Schmitz light pistons and longer rods, dynamically balanced crank ( the original crank was cracked on the drive side and replaced with a good crack tested second hand crank) , new mains, valves, guides etc. The cam is standard 850. The engine was rebuilt by John Saywell in Wellington. Carbs are new Amal premiers, ignition is Pazon. I rebuilt the rest of the bike. The frame etc has been checked and corrected as necessary as per the "Worlds Straightest Commando" article.

The bike has a good quality Black and Gold Roadster paint job done in 1997 but recently I have purchased a complete Interstate tank, sidecovers, seat and passenger grab rail set which is painted in very high quality candy apple red. Basically I have owned this bike since I was a student in university and two years ago when I retired it was restored and upgraded money no object. All the original parts were retained and can be replaced." The owner later added: "I had the bike completely to pieces about 5 years ago and had a very good look at the steering head. The F number was easy to find but I did not see anything else. I was not looking for the second number at the time but did sand the paint back so I'm pretty certain I would have seen it. I can confirm the frame definitely has imperial diameter tubing. Not metric. I measured the main backbone tube and the front down tubes, and they were imperial sizing." So, a Renolds frame with no 00xxx number and an "F" in the frame number - I would like to find a couple more with this much info as it debunks a lot of the thinking about Frame Numbers and the 00xxx number.

328913Mar 75850F129250RH4I have a 1975 850 Mk III Commando Roadster, either US or Canadian export version (It has a Canadian Warning Light assimilator). Build date is March 1975. It has an Imperial frame. Gas tank is black OEM paint, side covers, seat & mufflers all missing when I obtained it. I plan to get the factory records for it from AN later this year. I will pass them on, once I receive them. Bike was left outside to rot. Mufflers, chain guard & lower section of from rim did exactly that. Odometer shows a bit over 5600 miles. Ohio license plate expired in March 1983. All numbers match.
329536Mar 75850F129311RH4The frame listed is the original frame. It was replaced with a new frame from Andover Norton Feb 2020. Info from the owner: I was the 3rd owner, buying the bike in late 9/79. First owner unknown, 2nd owner bought the bike in early 1979 & crashed it at the end of that summer. I bought it as a rideable wreck with 14,913 miles on it, and shortly thereafter replaced the gas tank, handlebars, front fender & a few minor related parts. Currently, it has 17,832 on the replacement speedometer, but I probably rode it 2,000+ miles with a broken speedo at one point years ago; I estimate total mileage on the bike is about 35,000+ miles. It had been shipped to the the US, per factory records, as a white (JPN colors presumably) roadster but it was a black roadster when I bought it – no clue as to whether Berliner or the first owner did the color change, but the tank & side cover paint looked OEM to me at the time. Several years later, I made it into an Interstate, still black. It had been converted to a Mikuni singe carb & peashooters by that time. It now has a Mikuni carb, Pazon electronic ignition and repro black cap mufflers but is essentially otherwise essentially stock.

I know the bike was an interpol model. It was part of a fleet of 36 MK3 that served as presidential escort for Jomo Kenyatta, the first president of Kenya. I presume the engine belongs to one of the other bikes in the fleet. They were decommissioned in the early 80's. I have no other info on its early days. 335791See NotesRH4From the Factory Record: Production Batch No: 9A, Tested and Accepted: May 9, 1977, Dispatched From No. 2 Works: May 30, 1977, Silver Interstate.

The red certification label is very interesting.
1) Instread of the Month and Year, it just has 77.
2) The serial number is in the form of the normal frame number @850@335791@ and the owner cannot find a frame number stanped into the headstock.

The current owner says that it was originally delivered to London dealer Read Brothers, further comments on the document, Interstate UK MPH. I checked some of the frame tube OD’s and I believe it to be imperial tube and not metric . So somehow it may have shipped went over to the US at some point I’m assuming. It was first registered here in UK on 4th August 2005. I purchased it a year ago from the owner who purchased it in 2005 from a dealer who must have done the importing, Cotswold Classics who are bust now having lost their licence to sell due to some unscrupulous dealing!
