This page is the result of an on-going survey of Norton Commandos.  The idea it to understand better the history of he Commando as it related to the numbers made and some of the changes over the years. It is not always possible to know if bikes are original and often they have been changed, sometimes radically from how they were made.  Generally, the Notes column tries to make what is known and what isn't clear.

Frame Numbering:

Norton frames were initially made by Reynolds (British Company) and later by Verlicchi (Italian company).

There is sometimes confusion over "frame numbers" on Commandos. The red metal plate attached to the headstock with hammer drive screws is called a Certification Label. It normally contains the bike's serial number (engine/gearbox number) and a date (Month and Year). 850s have that and they have a number stamped into the metal on the side of the head stock - that is the frame number. 750s after 1968 have no frame number.

There are four types of 850 frame numbers. They all have a special character intermixed which is similar to Norton Frame Symbol:

This info below is not verified and if you have anything to dispute, change, or back it up, I would like to hear it:
  • It appears that most 850 frames were made by Verlicchi, but possibly up to 100/week were made by Reynolds for some period of time
  • Supposedly if there was a problem with a Verlicchi frame, Reynolds would fix it
  • In general, Reynolds used imperial sized tubing (1” & 2.25”) and Verlicchi used metric sized tubing (25mm & 60mm)
    • However there are frames with a mix of the two
    • One theory is that Reynolds fixed Verlicchi frames using imperial tubes.
  • I've been told that for 850s:
    • Reynolds stamped the frame number on the drive-side of the headstock and Verlicchi on the timing-side.
    • I've also been told that the Reynolds number would match the engine.
    • Until now, I've never seen one on the drive-side - see 304987 below.  More investigating needs to be done.  There is no number on the right and the number on the left does not match the engine and the owner says that the bike has never been apart.  Also, the number on the frame only has five digits - 00109.  Then there's 312097. Has a frame number on the right and a 5-digits number on the left - 00122.
Survey Results: Info on 356 Commandos found so far 

No one seems to know how many were actually built but drawing from various sources, including this page, I think about 24,600 750s, 23,100 850s before MKIII, and 10,800 MKIIIs which makes the total 58,500. I've seen totals as high as 60,000 and as low as 50,000.  I'm confident that I'm no more than 1,000 low or 1,000 high.

127669See Notes127669RH3I recently purchased a Norton Commando frame no 127669 first registered in March 1969 here in the UK, although I was told by Andover Norton when ordering some parts it was manufactured in June 1968. The frame number is stamped on the drive side of the head stock - there is no red Certification Label - the bike was built before that startedd being used. It has the old style centre stand and the side stand is in the middle of bottom section of the frame and very awkward to use. It is not a matching numbers bike the gearbox has the same number as the frame. The engine no is 203228 and a "C" on the head

No colour recorded but there is blue metallic paint under the black paint on the fiberglas tank That should mean that it is Sapphire Blue. Was then shipped to a dealership in France. More Info owner/owner's club: 134673 it was described as a Commando S type late 1969 correctly. As mentioned on the phone you have purchased this from the USA but I have confirmed, it went to France first. Continental Cars had three outlets in the USA and one in France. So your S type found it`s way there somehow. I have also checked the colour which was not listed in this case.

Not much left of the original bike, but I am glad to have it back. It is a lovely rider! Based on the frame that it came with, it had been a chopper at one time - the steering head had been raked out with some very questionable welds, and I found evidence that a sissy bar had been welded to the rear loop at one time. The main tube had a very noticeable bend in it - hence the frame was scrapped and a decent 1971 frame replaced it, updated with a later kickstand lug.

The current owner bought the bike in 1974 and by then it was a black Roadster. It has matching numbers.

The cylinders and head are 750 but the bottom end is 850. The frame has no number on the headstock so the frame is likely a 750 frame. The gearbox is 235196 so in the special 73 serial range. Government documentation has 313739 but no mention of the engine size- just says Commando for model. It has 932 carbs and no visible head number. From the gap between the cylinders and head I suspect a Combat or high-complession 73 750. My assumption is that 313739 was crashed and 235196 was used to rebuild it.

319265850F111966From the Andover Norton dispatch records, "Built" Aug 26, 1974, Dispatched Aug 27, 1974, MK2 Roadster. The bike was sold new in Sept 1975 in Wellington New Zealand. It is therefore registered as a 1975 bike by the NZ Transport authority.

Owner Said: "I am the third owner and bought the bike in 1978. I still know the second owner and only the first 18 months of its life is unknown to me. I think the bike may have been raced in the first 18 months of its life. The engine had a non standard camshaft, mainstand removed and the tank was painted black. I think it may have originally been a metalflake blue colour.

In 2019/20 I upgraded with several CNW components including - Brembo front brake, hydraulic clutch, Mk 111 type isolastics, CNW electric start. It also has a Dave Taylor head steady, one piece rear axle, and other detailing. The gearbox case has been replaced because of cracks between bearing housings etc. The engine is on first rebore with J Schmitz light pistons and longer rods, dynamically balanced crank ( the original crank was cracked on the drive side and replaced with a good crack tested second hand crank) , new mains, valves, guides etc. The cam is standard 850. The engine was rebuilt by John Saywell in Wellington. Carbs are new Amal premiers, ignition is Pazon. I rebuilt the rest of the bike. The frame etc has been checked and corrected as necessary as per the "Worlds Straightest Commando" article.

The bike has a good quality Black and Gold Roadster paint job done in 1997 but recently I have purchased a complete Interstate tank, sidecovers, seat and passenger grab rail set which is painted in very high quality candy apple red. Basically I have owned this bike since I was a student in university and two years ago when I retired it was restored and upgraded money no object. All the original parts were retained and can be replaced."

328913Mar 75850F129250RH4I have a 1975 850 Mk III Commando Roadster, either US or Canadian export version (It has a Canadian Warning Light assimilator). Build date is March 1975. It has an Imperial frame. Gas tank is black OEM paint, side covers, seat & mufflers all missing when I obtained it. I plan to get the factory records for it from AN later this year. I will pass them on, once I receive them. Bike was left outside to rot. Mufflers, chain guard & lower section of from rim did exactly that. Odometer shows a bit over 5600 miles. Ohio license plate expired in March 1983. All numbers match.

It is currently undergoing a full restoration in Roadster Trim. The bike is now me in SW France. Engine and frame numbers are - 334003. The factory record was so devoid of information that Andover Norton Ltd refunded my money!
